President Karol Nawrocki told Rzeczpospolita that he is ready to resume talks on ambassador appointments, but not with Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski, only with Prime Minister Donald Tusk. In his words, Sikorski is not in control of the situation, and the prime minister stands above the minister.
The president said he will not ask for a meeting himself, but is sending a clear signal. Nawrocki claims that two meetings with Sikorski produced a full roadmap for leaving the crisis: each side made concessions, and the deal covered important European capitals and other major embassies, with parity between the government and the president. Everything was ready, he said.
The dispute over appointments has lasted more than two years. In March 2024 Sikorski decided that more than 50 ambassadors would end their missions, and candidates submitted by the previous ministry leadership would be withdrawn. Diplomats with the rank of chargé d'affaires were sent to replace ambassadors who had left but had not been formally recalled by the president. Nawrocki said he will not sign their appointments because he wants to solve the problem systemically.
