On Tuesday President Karol Nawrocki met Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw. At a joint press conference Nawrocki said that Poland and Lithuania are linked not only by centuries of history and neighbourhood but also by common interests, a strategic partnership and responsibility for the security of NATO's eastern flank.
According to Nawrocki, both countries understand that the aggressive policy of the Russian Federation remains the main threat to the region's security, so strengthening NATO's eastern flank must be a shared priority. Russia, he said, is waging hybrid actions against the countries of the region — cyberattacks, disinformation, sabotage and pressure on the borders. He also called for “joint reflection” on the US–Russia arrangement on supplies of Russian diesel to world markets: stabilising the energy situation must not weaken the pressure on Russia.
Nausėda called the two countries “not only strategic partners and neighbours but true close friends”. The meeting marked the 235th anniversary of the adoption of the Mutual Pledge of the Two Nations (Zaręczenie Wzajemne Obojga Narodów): in the Lithuanian president's words, against the backdrop of Russian aggression against Ukraine “the lessons of history take on new meaning”.
