Greenpeace activists have hung a 100-square-metre banner in Warsaw showing Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The banner is on the wall of a residential block opposite the Sejm building. Tusk holds a large saw, and above the portrait is the inscription: 'Where are the forests without saws?'.
The action marks the third anniversary of the elections won by the coalition led by Tusk. It recalls the prime minister's promise to protect 20% of the most valuable forests from logging. According to the organisation, only about 5% of public forests in Poland are now permanently protected, mostly in national parks and reserves created before 2023.
The largest new reserve created by Tusk's government, Bliżyńskie Lasy Naturalne, covers less than 30 square kilometres. According to Krzysztof Cibor, head of Greenpeace's campaign team, fulfilling the promise would require protecting an area of that size every day for the whole of next year.
