The Sejm passed a law banning night-time alcohol sales across the country, from 22:00 to 6:00, except at catering venues. The law is due to take effect on 1 January 2027. Gminas will be able to additionally ban takeaway sales from 21:00 to 22:00 or from 6:00 to 9:00. 400 deputies voted in favour, 29 against, four abstained.
The law completely bans advertising and promotion of all alcoholic drinks, including beer: the penalty is from 30,000 to 1 million zloty or restriction of liberty. A seller who doubts a buyer's age will be obliged to check a document and, without one, to refuse the sale.
Packaging up to 300 ml may only be glass or metal, and packs will carry warnings for pregnant women, drivers and minors. The fee for a sales permit will double: for drinks up to 18% from 525 to 1,050 zloty, for stronger ones from 2,100 to 4,200 zloty.
The draft was prepared by Lewica. The Sejm also passed amendments by PSL — Third Way that change the definition of alcohol promotion and introduce distance sales of alcohol.
