On Tuesday the Ministry of Energy published maximum fuel prices for Wednesday. A litre of Pb95 petrol may cost no more than 7.11 zloty, Pb98 no more than 8.01 zloty and diesel no more than 7.98 zloty. On Tuesday the caps were 7.06, 7.95 and 8.02 zloty respectively.
The Pb95 and Pb98 caps rose by five and six groszy per litre, while the diesel cap fell by four groszy. The next announcement is due on Wednesday and will set the prices for Thursday. Fines for not complying with the maximum prices can reach 1 million zloty.
The publication of maximum prices is part of the third stage of the Ceny Paliwa Nizej (CPN) package, which aims to curb price rises at petrol stations and reduce drivers' fuel costs. The mechanism was launched after part of the law on the windfall tax on fuel companies came into force. The president signed the law and at the same time referred it to the Constitutional Tribunal in follow-up review. The law paved the way for a temporary cut in excise duty and VAT on liquid fuels. This is to be funded by a new levy on fuel companies with above-average profits. According to government estimates, the package will run until the end of 2026 and could cost around 5 billion zloty.
