The minister of energy has published new maximum fuel prices under the “Ceny Paliwa Niżej” (Lower Fuel Prices) programme. On Wednesday a litre of 95 petrol will cost no more than 6.70 zł, 98 petrol 7.43 zł and diesel 7.98 zł. On Tuesday the caps were 6.79 zł, 7.56 zł and 7.97 zł: petrol is getting cheaper by 9 and 13 groszy, while diesel is going up by 1 grosz.

The caps are part of the third version of the “Ceny Paliwa Niżej” package, which is meant to curb price rises at filling stations. Failing to observe the maximum prices carries a fine of up to 1 million zł. The mechanism came into operation after part of the law on a windfall tax on fuel companies entered into force; the president signed the law and at the same time referred it to the Trybunał Konstytucyjny (Constitutional Tribunal) for ex-post review.

According to government estimates, the support package will run until the end of 2026 and cost around 5 billion zł. It is to be financed by a 60 percent tax on windfall profits from the sale of liquid fuels earned between 1 March 2026 and 31 March 2027 by fuel producers and companies licensed to trade fuel with foreign countries.
