Police detained a 46-year-old man in Oborniki on suspicion of publicly calling online for the murder of representatives of Polish authorities. Government spokesman Adam Szlapka announced the detention, which took place the day before. Among those named as targets of the calls were the prime minister and the Marshal of the Sejm.
The prosecutor's office confirmed the detention. On Tuesday the man was charged with incitement to murder and with insulting Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Marshal of the Sejm Wlodzimierz Czarzasty and a TVP Info journalist. The man is also charged with insulting MP Krzysztof Paszyk, former president Lech Walesa and deputy prime minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.
According to the prosecutor's office, since August the man had published such content on Facebook and TikTok. He has no previous convictions. He admitted publishing insulting material about various state officials but did not admit the charge of inciting their murder, and expressed regret and remorse. Police supervision, a ban on publishing insulting content in the media and a ban on leaving the country have been imposed. The charge carries up to three years in prison.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said threats against top officials are 'very numerous'. A message that reached the services on Sunday was assessed as far more serious than most similar cases.
