Chicago Fire secured a place in the MLS play-offs thanks to a favourable result in the Orlando City–DC United match, even though they lost their last two games: 0-1 to New England Revolution and 1-3 to Philadelphia Union. For Robert Lewandowski's team it is the second consecutive appearance in the decisive stage of the season.

In ESPN's ranking, which covers all 30 teams in the league, the club dropped from fifth to sixth place. “Still one of the strongest teams in the East, the Fire played two other East Coast contenders and fell short of expectations in both matches,” the review says. Above them are Vancouver Whitecaps, Philadelphia Union, St. Louis City, Inter Miami and Nashville SC.

After Lewandowski's return to MLS, Gregg Berhalter's team won two matches — 3-1 against Vancouver Whitecaps and 2-1 against New York Red Bulls. The Polish striker has featured in the last four league matches; in the game against New England Revolution he again failed to score.
