Prime Minister Donald Tusk pushed at the EU summit in Brussels for a delay of the new CO2 emissions fee mechanism, ETS2. According to RMF FM, he wanted to postpone ETS2 to 2030 at the earliest, limit the burden on industry and block the transfer of part of the emissions trading revenue into the new EU budget. Italy and the Visegrad Group countries supported Poland in this.
No final decision on postponing to 2030 was taken. Sweden, Finland and Denmark objected to weakening the system. The summit's conclusions state that the European Commission will re-examine all the effects of ETS2, including mechanisms that protect against excessive costs. This does not mean an automatic change of the start date.
ETS2 is to cover fuels for buildings and road transport: petrol, diesel, natural gas and other fossil fuels. The obligation to report allowances falls mainly on fuel suppliers, but their cost may be passed on to fuel and heating prices. Many households fear exactly this.
