On Tuesday, 20 October, it emerged that Iga Świątek had withdrawn from the WTA 500 tournament in Ningbo because of a problem with her left thigh; the injury had already been troubling her in the Wuhan semi-final, which she lost to Maja Chwalińska 5-7, 1-6. The 25-year-old then announced on social media that she is ending her season and will not play another tournament this year — she will also miss the WTA Finals.
“This has been one of the most demanding seasons of my career, full of challenges, changes and lessons,” she wrote, adding that she is proud of the work done with her team in the second half of the year. She explained the reason this way: “The last few months, and in fact the last few years, have been incredibly intense. I feel that I need rest and time for my body to fully recover.”
Świątek thanked her fans and promised to return “with passion and motivation”. The Wuhan semi-final was her last match of the year; she finished the season with a single title, at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto.
