The Insurance Guarantee Fund (UFG, Ubezpieczeniowy Fundusz Gwarancyjny) automatically detects gaps in compulsory third-party liability (OC) insurance: a car may be sitting in a garage, yet the owner will still receive a demand to explain the gap. If the breach is confirmed, UFG will charge a fee.

In 2026, a passenger car without OC for one to three days costs 1,920 zł, four to fourteen days 4,810 zł, and more than fourteen days the full rate of 9,610 zł; for trucks the ceiling is 14,420 zł. The amounts are tied to the minimum wage, which stands at 4,806 zł gross, so they rise together with it. Whether the car was used on those days makes no difference.

Most often a gap arises after buying a used car: the seller’s policy passes to the buyer but expires at the end of the term for which it was taken out and does not renew on its own. An unused or broken-down car must also be insured if it is registered. On receiving a demand, it is worth first checking whether there really was a gap.
