National Prosecutor Dariusz Korneluk said on TVN24 that the 19-year-old attacker brought to the school in Ostrołęka not only a knife but also a backpack with a homemade explosive device that almost went off. Smoke came from the backpack in a computer classroom — the teacher and pupils threw it out of the window. This may have prevented an explosion.
Nine people were injured: five pupils, two teachers and two passers-by in the park by the school. According to the voivode, their lives are not in danger. The suspect, school pupil Jakub Z., was detained about 400–500 metres from the school, by the city beach. He injured himself and after hospital was placed in a police detention facility.
Prosecutors are investigating attempted murder of nine people, and the classification may be widened. The motives have not yet been established.
