The Liber bookshop operated at 24 Krakowskie Przedmieście from 1991, in two premises of the former St Roch hospital building on the University of Warsaw campus: one sold fiction, the other academic books. This year the chain ran into financial problems and closed its shops. A petition to save the bookshop was signed by almost 2,000 people.
Now the Księgarnia Uniwersytecka has opened in one of the premises. For now it sells only University of Warsaw publications and branded clothing — sweatshirts, T-shirts, caps. The university promises later to set up a full academic bookshop on its own.
Next to UW, where about 40,000 students study, after Liber closed there remained one academic bookshop, named after Bolesław Prus.
