On 1 June a taxi hit Belarusian citizen Natalia Borukhova twice at a pedestrian crossing on Aleja KEN in the Ursynów district. The car then pinned her against a BMW. Witnesses said the driver had probably confused the accelerator and the brake pedals.
The woman underwent five operations. The day after the crash, doctors estimated her chances of survival at 50%. She died on 16 June, after 16 days in hospital.
According to the outlet the-warsaw.pl, police did not detain the woman driver, did not question her, and did not seize her phone or passport. Prosecutors opened the case only after the death. The suspect, a citizen of Tajikistan, left Poland the next day. She was charged in absentia, and the arrest warrant was issued after she had left. Prosecutors learned of her departure from the Border Guard only on 1 September.
Poland and Tajikistan have no extradition treaty. According to the victim's husband, he requested the case files on 18 June, but his lawyer received them only on 29 August. The husband, together with a lawyer in Tajikistan, is trying to find the suspect. Prosecutors say no legal deadline applies to such requests and have not explained why the suspect was allowed to leave.
