Polish services have broken up an international group that, according to investigators, laundered money from investment fraud and cryptocurrency schemes. Nine people were detained: three women and five men from Ukraine and a woman from Belarus, said Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for the minister coordinating the special services.
The operation took place in Warsaw, Łódź and the Małopolska province. Investigators say the group carried out transactions worth more than PLN 337 million. It was allegedly led by a 34-year-old Ukrainian citizen who made key decisions and oversaw the flow of money in Poland and abroad.
To hide the origin of the funds, the group used currency exchange offices and fictitious gold purchases. During searches of flats, offices and exchange offices, cash and gold worth over one million zlotys were seized, along with computers and phones.
At the prosecutor's request, a court remanded seven suspects in custody: six for three months and one for two. The other two were released on bail with police supervision and a ban on leaving the country. The Gdańsk branch of the ABW, the Warmia-Masuria unit of the Border Guard and the Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime in Łódź took part; the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Łódź supervised the case.
